On Covid-19 (14 Mar)

This week's covid-19 data analysis is divided into 3 parts, maps, time-series data and Google search interest analytics

MAPS

Below are 2 world maps with the number of confirmed cases from last week and this week.

Comparison

Produced on 14 March

One of the most obvious features from the maps above is the increased cases in the US.

And as we can see from the map below, states like Washinton, California and New York are in a more serious situation compare to other states.

Furthermore, I also zoomed in to Europe area's confirmed cases. Countries like Norway, Sweden and Denmark have the most prominent increase in confirmed cases compare to last week.

As panic buying happens in various countries during the past week, I think it might be interesting to look at Google's search engine data on keywords like "hand sanitizer", "mask" and of course "toilet paper".

*Note 1: All of the analysis below is set during the time frame: Jan - Mar 2020

Although there are a lot of memes circulating on the internet about consumers panic buying toilet paper, the search interest on Google is still relatively lower than mask and hand sanitizer. While the search interest on "mask" has always been high since the beginning of the year, it has been overtaken by "hand sanitizer" at the past week. As we can see clearly from the graph, the search interest on hand sanitizer has grown exponentially since the end of February.

A visualised map on the mask's search interest may provide us with insights from another perspective.

Although the map shows China has a high search interest on hand sanitizer, that is because of Hong Kong has a high interest index, following by regions like the UK and the US.

To gain a better understanding, below is a bar chart showing the countries with the highest hand sanitizer interest index.

I find it interesting to see Saint Martin is in the second place of the chart.

As covid-19 is currently spreading drastically among the Europe area, I zoom in the map from above to see different patterns among the European countries.

As shown from the graph, countries like the UK, France, Denmark and Sweden are amongst the highest interest of hand sanitizer, with the interest index ranging from 37 to 16. Meanwhile, Italy and Spain, the 2 most serious countries at the moment have the lowest interest index not only among Europe but among the whole world. However, it might also due to the people there use languages other than English on Google, or they rely on other search engines.

So what about the search interest for "Mask"?

Although the map shows China has a 100 search interest on mask, that is again, because of Hong Kong.

Same as above, I zoom in the map from above to see different patterns among the European countries.

The countries with the highest mask's search interest are the UK, Ireland and Sweden, and this is probably because these countries use English to search on Google the most. Meanwhile, it is important to note that even though the United Kingdom has the highest search interest in mask among Europe, it's index is only 14, it is lower than Australia and Canada as we can see on the world map above. Overall, the interest index of mask is lower than hand sanitizer among Europe.

Lastly, I find it interesting that countries like Portugal and Croatia have a relatively high mask's interest index among Europe while their covid-19 cases are way less than Italy, France, Germany and Spain.

And here is a bar chart showing the countries with the highest mask interest index. Not surprisingly, the countries that have the highest search interest are mostly Asia countries.

As the situation of covid-19 continues to develop, I will try my best to produce data analysis and visualisation on the situation on a weekly basis. I opened a new blog section under the name of "Covid-19", so every piece of my articles related to coronavirus can be found under the section.
